Technology is the power behind the world’s richest, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index.
The latest figures indicate a technology dominance, with 3 of the 5 richest billionaires from a tech background, but who is No.1?
Here are the Top 5…
5. Amancio Ortega – $74.8 billion
Amancio Ortega counts brands such as Zara in his portfolio, and the Spanish tycoon keeps his place in the World’s Top 5 Billionaire’s despite a loss to his net work of $514m over the past year – small change to the world’s wealthiest retailer.
4. Mark Zuckerberg – $77.3 billion
Facebook’s co-founder and current serving CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, posted a very healthy increase of $4.53 billion on his fortune over the past year. The New York-born technology entrepreneur has also pledged to make to 2018 the year that Facebook focuses on becoming “better for your health and wellbeing”, so expect that value to continue to increase.
3. Warren Buffett – $88.8 billion
The American investor and mainstay of world’s richest lists continues to increase his worth with an increase of $3.48 billion over the past year, with stakes in the likes of American Express and Coca-Cola proving profitable
Buffett is (at the time of writing) the world’s richest non-technology entrepreneur.
2. Bill Gates – $93.2 billion
Since 1987, Microsoft’s co-founder has dominated the world’s richest rankings. However, 2017 proved to be the year that another entrepreneur pipped the now-philanthropist to the No.1 spot.
1. Jeff Bezos – $108 billion
The man who meshed technology and retail to devastating effect in the form of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, took the coveted No.1 spot on the world’s richest list in 2017, as his personal worth recorded an increase of a staggering $8.48 billion.
The tech entrepreneur has also diversified his portfolio over the years, with other interests including The Washington Post (which he bought with £250 million in cash), further cementing his place as the world’s richest billionaire.
